When people think about kayaking, they often think about adventure, sunsets, and time on the water. But for Aransas Pathways, kayaking is also about community, conservation, wellness, and connecting people to the story of the Texas coast.
One of the volunteer leaders helping make that vision possible is Jim Farnsworth.
Jim is part of the growing community effort behind the Kayaking Pillar of Aransas Pathways. Through his volunteer leadership, he helps support outdoor experiences that encourage both residents and visitors to explore the scenic waterways of Aransas County and the Coastal Bend.
A Lifetime of Leadership and Outdoor Adventure
Before becoming involved with Aransas Pathways, Jim spent 40 years working in the financial industry. At the same time, he dedicated much of his life to volunteer leadership through Scouting and outdoor education.
For more than 25 years, Jim served in several leadership roles within Scouting programs. He led high-adventure activities and guided river trips throughout Texas. He also participated in wilderness expeditions in Quetico Provincial Park in Canada, a well-known destination for paddling and outdoor exploration.
Jim later became both a Kayaking and Canoeing Merit Badge Counselor, helping teach young paddlers about safety, teamwork, leadership, and respect for nature.
Today, he continues sharing that passion by helping support community kayaking programs and paddling experiences connected to Aransas Pathways.
Why Kayaking Matters to Aransas Pathways
Kayaking is one of the four core pillars of Aransas Pathways alongside Birding, History, and Trails.
The waterways of Aransas County are part of the region’s identity, history, and ecosystem. Through guided paddles, educational experiences, and community events, Aransas Pathways encourages people to experience the coast in a meaningful and responsible way.
Programs like Pathways in Motion: Kayak at Sunset are designed to help participants:

These experiences also contribute to sustainable tourism and help position Aransas County as a growing ecotourism destination in the Texas Coastal Bend.
Community Stewardship in Action
Volunteer leaders play an important role in the mission of Aransas Pathways. Their knowledge, experience, and dedication help create safe and welcoming outdoor experiences for the public.
Jim Farnsworth represents the spirit of community stewardship that continues to move Aransas Pathways forward — connecting people not only to nature, but also to the stories and landscapes that make Aransas County unique.
