Lamar Burton Wetlands Sanctuary
28.149858 -97.001094 (see map) partially Through a generous donation Aransas First is preserving and creating public access to 105 acres of wetlands in the critical Lamar Peninsula, the winter home of the endangered whooping cranes. It will have dirt or grass trails or open ground to walk on for visitors but parking area is ADA and is a great birding site We will formally open it with kiosks and signage after kiosks are built in May. We are waiting for whooping cranes to leave.
Bent Oaks Rookery Park
1902 E. Maple St, Rockport, TX 78382 or 1401 Broadway St, Rockport, TX 78382 (see map) Bent Oaks Rookery Park is a 8.856-acre piece of land located across from Little Bay, bordered by Broadway, Business Highway 35, and Maple Street, was purchased by the city in January 2016 for $2.995 million using tax and revenue certificates of obligation. A 14-space parking lot was installed about one month before Hurricane Harvey. The nearly nine-acre piece of property includes large windswept oaks and an active, federally protected Great Blue Heron and Great Egret rookery. The city bought the property to preserve the trees and rookery.

Celebrate the birds of the Rockport area!
Aransas Pathways Birding Field Trip – March Schedule Meet at the parking lot behind the “Rockport Beach” sign, just before entering Rockport Beach Park, 210 Seabreeze Drive, Rockport, TX 78382 Celebrate the birds of the Rockport area! Join volunteer (and retired park ranger and bird guide) Bob Showler to look for birds at Aransas Pathways sites and other points of interest. Be prepared to drive your own car up to 20 miles round-trip and bring water, sun & insect protection, and binoculars (if you have them; loaner binoculars also available). We may be walking up to 1/4 mile at certain stops. Access to most sites is free, but there is a $10 fee to enter Rockport Beach Park (free to annual passholders; visit Rockport Beach (rockportbeach-texas.com) for more information on purchasing an annual pass). Adventure of learning and sightseeing aboard The Skimmer.
Join us as we take you back in time to the abundant history in the settlement of Copano Bay aboard the Skimmer captained by Tommy Moore & Historical guide Pam Stranahan. This is an adventure of learning and sightseeing you will not want to miss! This will be a 3 hour trip aboard the flagship Skimmer. Tour time 9am – 12pm. There will be light finger foods and drinks provided. Please keep in mind this is an outdoor event and nature governs the trip. If forced to postpone, March 31 is the alternate date. “Quilting in the New Normal” – Open Jan. 14 at the History Ctr.
The Piecemakers-by-the-Bay and The Friends of the History Center will present a show titled ”Quilting in the New Normal.” Coffee and pastries will be served at the opening on Saturday, January 14, 10 AM. Opening remarks will be made by Susie Black. Mimi Braniff will present a traditional Bed Turning program where quilts will be shown with the patterns and stitching described. The main galleries at the History Center will be filled with needlework from guild members and Fourth Graders from Sacred Heart School. Programs will be featured on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 PM. A beautiful quilt created by the Piecemakers will be raffled at the close of the exhibit. Tickets ($1 each or 6 for $5) will be available at the History Center. The drawing for a winner will be held Sunday, April 2 at 4:00 PM. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the History Center.
“Holiday Traditions” at the History Center
Enjoy an early glimpse into the “Holiday Traditions” exhibit on Saturday, November 19, 1- 4 PM and view a program on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 PM at the History Center, 801 E. Cedar St. The program, “Christmas in Texas,” will be presented in a slide program by Pam Stranahan. She will illustrate the many nationalities who settled in Texas and brought their traditions with them. Add your favorite family tradition to the stories from the past. The main gallery of the History Center will remind you of days-gone-by with ornaments and trees to entertain you. Many ornaments come from the collection of Mrs. Wilson who was the owner of the Bailey house on S. Church Street. A tree decorated with coastal shells will inspire you to walk our local beaches. Bask in the twinkling lights that bring memories of magical times. Visit the History Center during Tropical Christmas on Saturday, December 3, 1 – 4 PM. Take a break from other activities to view trees and décor from historic eras. Find unique gifts at the History Center. Publications about local history by the Center include the R-F Art Colony, ABCs of the Art Colony (for youth), Foodways: The Culinary Traditions of Aransas County, Aransas County in Postcards, 30 Years Through the News/Lens, and Doc Bruhl’s Herb Garden.
